Ilhwa Kim’s work ‘Seed_universe 天下圖’ is composed of tens of thousands of seed units. Each seed unit has the combination of straight lines and circles, which compose a tiny single universe in her own physical terms. The materials are not given, but created personally for the each single universe. Kim dyes each sheet of paper by hand with thousands of different colors and cuts and rolls the layers of paper to make it rigid. It gives her an emotional bonding to each single universe. Not a single universe has the same shape, look, color in her work.

Kim's universe achieves dramatic transformation between a close up and a distance away. Tiny seed units by Kim's hands are firm and rigid, but the lump by the seed waves moves tender and fast. Tenderly relaxed talk on the sculptural weight and tactile painting quality. Kim's universe pushes away the distinction between sculpture and painting. The tactile universes are extremely free from optimum point of view.

A PROPOS

Ilwha Kim est une artiste sud-coréenne de Séoul, née en 1967. Son œuvre se compose d’un véritable univers de graines qui tendent à un développement en harmonie. Chacune de ces centaines de graines s’assemblent dans un mouvement abstrait parfois circulaire, parfois linéaire.

Ce processus de composition est basé sur la répétition d’une unité de sculpture en papier de mûrier séché, travaillé chacun de manière unique, puis enroulé de façon à créer une graine rigide ; tout un univers apparaît dans leur fusion, transmettant au spectateur les émotions de l’artiste qui se propagent de graine en graine.

L’œuvre d’Ilwha Kim est très colorée, passant de couleurs tendres et sereines à des formes plus dramatiques, donnant des sensations de vitesse, des effets d’optique. L’artiste crée des paysages entre peinture et sculpture saisissants, haptiques et provoquant également l’imagination d’un rêve, l’évasion.
